Rajnath Singh is the senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has been the Defence Minister of India since 2019. Singh also served as the Union Home Minister in the Narendra Modi government from 2014 to 2019. Rajnath Singh was the president of the BJP twice from 2005 to 2009 and again from 2013 to 2014. He has been a Lok Sabha member from the Lucknow constituency of Uttar Pradesh for the last two terms. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Singh won the Lucknow seat by defeating Congress candidate Rita Bahuguna Joshi with a margin of 2,72,749 votes. In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Singh retained the Lucknow constituency by defeating Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Poonam Shatrughan Sinha with a margin of 3,47,302 votes. Rajnath Singh also represented the Ghaziabad parliamentary seat from 2009 to 2014. Singh was the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister from 2000 to 2002 and also won the Haidergarh Assembly constituency twice in 2001 (bypoll) and 2002. He was also a member of Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2001 and again from 2002 to 2008. Singh also served as the Union Cabinet Minister for Agriculture (2003-2004) and Road Transport and Highways (1999-2000) in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government. Rajnath Singh is again contesting from the Lucknow constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

As the Citizenship Bill brings about a huge discontent resulting in protest across the north-eastern states, Home Minister Rajnath Singh has decided to meet the chief ministers of these states "very soon".
He was interacting with mediapersons after inaugurating the administrative building, residential block and officers' mess at the SSB sector headquarters.
The 20-member manifesto committee has several Union Ministers in it, including Arun Jaitley, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Nirmala Sitharaman, Thaawarchand Gehlot, Piyush Goyal and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
"The purpose is that the migrants facing persecution anywhere in the country can apply for Indian citizenship. After that they can live in any state of the country like an Indian citizen," the Minister said.
Union minister Nitin Gadkari will head a committee which will reach out to social and volunteer organisations while his Cabinet colleague Sushma Swaraj will head a group that will produce literature for the polls, it added.
As Kerala continued to witness incidents of violence, Governor Justice P Sathasivam on Saturday briefed the Centre about the law and order situation in the southern state.
Jammu and Kashmir was last month placed under President's rule, six months after the BJP pulled out of Mehbooba Mufti-led government and the state was put under Governor's rule.
The home minister also informed the Lok Sabha that there was no other option left with the Governor but to recommend President’s Rule in the state as no party or alliance staked claim to form government.

With Hindutva organisations ramping up pressure on the government to bring a law to build Ram temple in Ayodhya, Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday asked BJP lawmakers to be patient on the issue.

Campaigning for the BJP for the November 28 polls, he accused the Congress of engaging in divisive politics.
Rajnath said the BJP wants Ram temple to be built in a conducive environment. However, he added that everyone should wait for the Supreme Court verdict over the decades-long contentious issue.
The Congress leader requested Singh to provide Sidhu the cover bereft of political differences and rivalries.
