Rahul Gandhi resigns as Congress President over a month after the Congress Party lost 2019 Lok Sabha election. Rahul Gandhi took 100 per cent responsibility for Congress' defeat and said that he would continue to fight against the ideology of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"As President of the Congress party, I am responsible for the loss of the 2019 election. Accountability is critical for the future growth of our party," Rahul Gandhi said in a letter that was put on his Twitter account.

In his resignation letter, Rahul Gandhi took accountability of the Congress party's defeat in 2019 Lok Sabha elections. We didn’t fight a political party in the 2019 election, every institution of which was marshalled against the opposition. Rather, we fought the entire machinery of the Indian state, It is now crystal clear that our once cherished institutional neutrality no longer exists in India, he said in his resignation letter.

Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday tweeted a resignation letter in which he mentioned it was an honour for him to serve the Congress Party. Earlier during the day, Gandhi had said he has already submitted his resignation and that he is no longer the Congress chief. Gandhi's resignation comes after the Congress won just 52 of the 542 Lok Sabha seats.

Rahul Gandhi, earlier in the day, resigned from the top post of the party and said the party's working committee should meet immediately to decide on his successor.

Rahul said that he had given his resignation a month ago and the new president should have been chosen then.
