Jai Prakash Singh, speaking during an event, had described Rahul Gandhi unfit for PM's chair due to his mother Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin.

The Congress has denied as false and baseless the remark published recently in an Urdu daily while its minority department head Nadeem Javed, who was quoted as saying that its president described the Congress as being a 'Muslim party', also denied having said so and claimed he was being "misquoted".

Meanwhile, a combative BJP questioned Rahul Gandhi's "silence" over his reported remarks that the Congress is "a Muslim party".

"I write to request (for) your support to ensure the passage of the Women's Reservation Bill in the coming monsoon session," Rahul Gandhi said.

The BJP in a strong statement, questioned Rahul Gandhi over why wasn't he responding to the questin by PM Modi on whether his party stood only for Muslim men and not Muslim women.

  Sinha, who took to Twitter to express his regret over the episode, said the Congress leader should join him in the debate in a civilised manner if the latter thought that his "personal conduct was disgusting". 

"In the meeting, we advised Rahul Gandhi to not talk about the Muslim community in particular as it will give others an opportunity to polarise him as a leader. He should rather talk about poverty and education."

According to sources, Muslim intellectuals advised Rahul to go back to the original principles of Congress.

The JD(U) had alleged that the AICC president failed to back Kumar when the latter took a stand against corruption cases involving RJD leaders last year.

Rahul Gandhi posted his picture with the two after the interaction on Tuesday and said he enjoyed the interaction.

Rahul Gandhi said that all those who feel disgusted over the sight of a Union Minister "garlanding and honouring criminals" should sign the petition against Sinha.

The Congress president's reaction comes at a time when Union minister Jayant Sinha has come under severe criticism for felicitating eight men convicted for the lynching of cattle trader Alimuddin Ansari on June 29 last year.
