Rahul Gandhi is the Congress leader and has been representing the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency since 2019. In the 2019 Lok Sabha Election, Rahul Gandhi won the Wayanad seat by defeating Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate PP Suneer with a margin of 4,31,770 votes. However, Gandhi was defeated by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Smriti Zubin Irani from his family's stronghold Amethi with a margin of 55,120 votes in the 2019 polls. Rahul Gandhi won three consecutive elections from Amethi in 2004, 2009 and 2014. He defeated Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidates Chandra Parkash Mishra Matiyari and Asheesh Shukla in the 2004 and 2009 polls respectively from Amethi. Rahul Gandhi again won the Amethi constituency in 2014 by defeating Smriti Zubin Irani with a margin of 1,07,903 votes. Gandhi was the president of the Congress party from 2017 to 2019.

In a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi on the row over his meeting with Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, BJP leader Smriti Irani on Thursday described the Congress chief as a "congenital liar" and wondered if he is "India's first post-truth politician".
"Rahul knows nothing about India and there is no question of he knowing anything about religion (dharma). Look, how they lie. You cannot get such a hybrid breed in world's any laboratory but in our country's Congress laboratory," said Hegde.
Rahul Gandhi stressed that he never shared the details of his conversation with the Goa CM Manohar Parrikar.
The Bairia MLA called Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ram, while likening the two Congress leaders to the villains in Ramayana.
Parrikar, former defence minister, further accused Gandhi of using his courtesy visit to him for petty political gains.
Addressing Yuva Kranti Yatra at Talkatora Stadium in Delhi, the Congress president alleged that Modi stole opportunities from youth to give Rs. 30,000 crore to Anil Ambani.
"Friends, the ex-defence minister clearly stated that he has nothing to do with the new deal that was orchestrated by Mr Narendra Modi to benefit Anil Ambani," Gandhi told booth-level party workers meeting in Kochi.
For Chandani Chowk, the name doing the rounds are those of former Delhi minister Haroon Yusuf and former Union minister Kapil Sibal. However, Sibal is a Rajya Sabha MP and may not contest.
"We can do it. We need to come together as a country," Gandhi said in a Facebook post.
The quota promise comes a day after Rahul Gandhi made the big announcement of assured minumum wage for poor, if elected.
Addressing a gathering of booth workers in Kerala's Cochin, Rahul said his party waived off loans taken by farmers in the three states - Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan - immediately after assuming the charge.
Gandhi also went to the opposition lobby and met Congress MLAs.
The Congress president claimed that the move would be unprecedented as 'no government in the world has ever taken such a decision'.
"When BJP government was formed, within one year Modi ji delivered on his promise on One rank one pension (OROP). Modi ji gave OROP to our jawans, Congress gave 'only Rahul only Priyanka'," he said.
Rahul Gandhi on Friday had alleged that as Patnaik had supported Modi's demonetisation, GST and other bills, there was an understanding between the BJD and the BJP.
