Nitin Gadkari is the senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has been the Minister of Road Transport and Highways since 2019. He is also serving as the Union Minister of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (2014), Shipping (2014 to 2019), Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation (2017 to 2019) and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (2019 to 2021) in the successive Narendra Modi governments. Gadkari was the president of the BJP from 2009 to 2013. He has been a Lok Sabha member from the Nagpur constituency of Maharashtra for the last two terms. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Gadkari won the Nagpur seat by defeating Congress candidate Vilas Muttemwar with a margin of 2,84,848 votes. In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Gadkari retained the Nagpur constituency by defeating Congress candidate Nana Patole with a margin of 2,16,009 votes. Gadkari was the Public Works minister in Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999 and also the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1999 to 2005. Nitin Gadkari is again contesting from the Nagpur constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

Responding to the opposition's charge of government tapping their phones, Gadkari denied allegations saying they are not tapping anyone's phone, these are baseless claims.
After the Modi government came to power, he said the government reviewed 406 stalled road projects worth Rs 3.85 lakh crore and restarted them. The restarting of these projects saved banks from the non-performing asset (NPA) of about Rs 3 lakh crore.
A significant focus of the visit will be on projects to improve the road infrastructure, which will make travel smooth and safer, and also increase tourism in the region.
The strategic 900 kilometre-long Chardham project worth Rs 12,000 crore aims to widen roads and provide all-weather connectivity to four holy places -- Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath -- in Uttarakhand.
These are strategically important for swift movement of defence forces along with agricultural, industrial and socio-economic progress of the region, the highways ministry said.
In a series of tweets, the Road Transport and Highways Minister also said he has sanctioned the widening and strengthening work of NH-334A to two lanes with a budget of Rs 227.06 crore in Uttar Pradesh.
Built at a cost of Rs 42,000 crore, the Expressway starts from Chand Sarai village in Lucknow. It will pass through Lucknow, Barabanki, Amethi, Ayodhya, Sultanpur, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh, Mau and Ghazipur.
"The problem is there is China which has fully developed its infrastructure, so tomorrow if we have to transport big trucks, machinery then it would need at least 10-metre wide roads otherwise we wouldn't be able to do it," Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said.
During the event, the Prime Minister will also dedicate over 223 km of completed & upgraded road projects, constructed with an estimated cost of over Rs 1180 crore at different NHs for boosting connectivity to Pandharpur. The event will take place via video conferencing, it said.
"Gadkari is a great example of how a people's representative can work for the development of the country," Sharad Pawar added.
The group has now launched a new firm - SUNSUL Technology - that will focus on innovation in the green energy sector.
Addressing the annual session of industry body PHDCCI, Gadkari further said that the govt is working to develop an ethanol economy.
Speaking to reporters at the Z-Morh tunnel site, Union Minister Gadkari said his ministry is also building 20 tunnels of a total length of 32 km in Jammu and Kashmir and 11 tunnels of a total length of 20 km in Ladakh.
Nitin Gadkari also batted for adopting a low-cost broad gauge metro line to connect Pune with other western Maharashtra districts and proposed to rope in private travel operators to operate them.
