Mohan Madhukar Bhagwat is the chief (Sarsanghchalak) of the nationalist organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and was chosen, in March 2009, as the successor to K. S. Sudarshan. After K. B. Hedgewar and M.S.Golwalkar, he is one of the youngest leaders to head the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Due to a high threat perception from various Islamic terrorist organisations, in June 2015, Centre ordered the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to provide Bhagwat with round-the-clock protection. He is the eldest son of his parents. From Government Veterinary College, Nagpur, he graduated in Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry. Towards the end of 1975, he dropped out of his postgraduate course in Veterinary Sciences and became a pracharak (full-time promoter/worker) of the RSS.

Speaking in the inaugural function of the three-day 'Shaiv Mahotsav' here, Bhagwat said, "The footprints of our culture are found all over the world."
Bhagwat's comments came at a time when violence on caste lines marred a celebration of Dalit groups in Maharashtra. The protests in Pune later spilled over to other parts of the state.
RSS spokesman Manmohan Vaidya said that the Sangh convenes two meetings annually where the conditions prevalent in the country is discussed.

In his Vijaya Dashmi speech at the RSS headquarters, he also said that the problems of the people displaced from the Kashmir during the 1990s are yet to be addressed.
"Any decision regarding Rohingyas should be taken by keeping in mind the threat to national security," Bhagwat said referring to the people who have fled from violence-hit Rakhine state in Myanmar.
