Mehbooba Mufti is an Indian politician and former chief minister of Indian Occupied Kashmir (4th April 2016-19th June 2018). Mehbooba is the first woman chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and India's second Muslim woman chief minister after Syeda Anwara Taimur of Assam. She is the president of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Mehbooba suppoted the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2016 but however she resigned on 19th June,2018 after BJP withdrew support from the coalition government. Mehbooba Mufti was a member of Indian parliament representing Anantnag in the 16th Lok Sabha. She had also represented Anantnag in the 14th Lok Sabha. Her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was appointed as India's home minister in 1989 and was released after a few days in exchange for some terrorists. In 1996 state assembly elections, Mehbooba Mufti was one of the popular elected members from Bijbehra on INC ticket. Mehbooba Mufti contested in the parliamentary elections in 1999 from Srinagar and she lost to the sitting member Omar Abdullah. She won her Pahalgam seat from South Kashmir, when assembly elections were held again in 2002.

Mehbooba was reacting to the continuous closure of a few mosques and shrines in Srinagar city, including Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta here, for the past few weeks in the wake of a spike in COVID-19 cases.
Earlier in her tweet, Mufti had alleged that soldiers from an army camp had ransacked civilian homes and beaten up civilians in Tral in South Kashmir's Pulwama district.
In a controversial statement, Mehbooba Mufti said, "Those in Delhi are using J&K as a laboratory and are experimenting here. Leaders like, Nehru, Vajpayee had vision for J&K but this govt creates a divide between Hindu and Muslims. Sardars are now Khalistani, we are Pakistani, only BJP is Hindustani..."
Mehbooba has made it clear time and again that she herself is not going to fight the assembly elections as her objective is to seek restoration of Article 370 of the Constitution which was abrogated by the BJP-led government in August 2019.
Mehbooba reached Jammu late on Saturday after a five-day tour of Poonch and Rajouri districts, facing a small protest by a group of Rashtriya Bajrang Dal activists whose attempt to stop her cavalcade near Dogra chowk in the city was foiled by police.
"We all need to unite because they want to divide us. There is so much corruption in Jammu and Kashmir government now....," Mufti said.
On Wednesday, the former Jammu and Kashmir CM had said the Taliban has “come to the fore as a reality” and advised them to follow the true Sharia law that guarantees rights to women, children, and the elderly if they want to govern Afghanistan.
If Taliban follows the example of governance set by Prophet Muhammad in Madina, it will set an example for the world, the former J&K CM said.
