Kanhaiya Kumar is Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate from Begusarai in Bihar. He is a former president of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union. He received his doctorate from JNU in 2019. Kanhaiya Kumar was born in Bihat village in Bihar. The village is in Begusarai District. He graduated in Geography from College of Commerce in Patna. He topped entrance examination of Jawaharlal Nehru University and pursued his Ph.D. in African Studies. In 2016, Kanhaiya Kumar got embroiled in a controversy after which he was arrested in connection with a program against hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. He was also accused of being involved in 'anti-India' sloganeering. Kanhaiya Kumar has denied the charges. Police also charged former JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya for allegedly shouting anti-India slogans during the event.
The police arrested Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya that year for allegedly organising an event in the JNU campus against the hanging of Parliament attack mastermind Afzal Guru.
Kanhaiya Kumar is likely to contest the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Begusarai constituency as a CPI candidate.
Protesting doctors have communicated about the incident to the Union Health Minister and the Bihar government.
"If the party (CPI) decides to nominate me as its candidate from Begusarai and other grand alliance partners also extend their support, then I don't have any objection to it," Kumar told PTI.
The 2016 event was organised in the JNU campus against Afzal Guru’s hanging during which anti-national slogans were allegedly raised.
Kanahiya Kumar was assaulted by lawyers at the Patiala House court on February 15 and 17 that year while he was in police custody.
Kanhaiya Kumar and 29 other JNU students have been asked to join the probe into alleged raising of anti-national slogans on the campus in February last year.
