Political parties in Punjab have requested the ECI to reschedule the Assembly polls in the state in view of the Guru Ravidass Jayanti which falls on February 16.

Manohar Singh dubbed the decision of the Congress giving ticket to Gurpreet Singh GP as “injustice” with the people of the constituency and alleged that the sitting legislator was “incapable and ineffective.”

In a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra, Channi wrote that it was brought to his notice by some representatives of the Scheduled Castes community, which contributes around 32 per cent of the state's population, that the birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas falls on February 16.  

Sources said Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi can contest elections from two seats. Adampur and Chamkor Sahib could be the two seats from where Channi is likely to contest.

The Punjab CM used the occasion of Modi's video interaction with chief ministers over the COVID-19 situation to convey the message to him. He regrets whatever happened during his visit to Punjab, Channi told Modi. The prime minister is respected to him, he added.

A couple of days ago, Navjot Singh Sidhu in a presser while responding to a media query asked, "who said the Congress high command will decide the next CM? It will be the people of the state who will choose it."

Himanta Biswa alleged that the Congress high command and the party's other central leaders were part of the conspiracy against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged that the Congress high command and his Punjab counterpart had conspired to assassinate the prime minister through the ‘security breach’ on January 5 while Narendra Modi was visiting the northern state.

The Lok Sabha MP from Anandpur Sahib also tagged a news report titled "Channi nudges Congress to name candidate for CM, with a hint: he is quite popular" along with the tweet.

The development comes as a surprise as Channi himself represents the Congress party, a rival of BJP.

Punjab got its third DGP in a span of three months.

The election commission announced poll dates for Punjab. Voting will take place on February in one single phase. Punjab has a total of 117 assembly seats.

The Governor, in a statement, said the file regarding regularisation of the services of contractual employees was sent back to the office of Chief Minister with six queries that need to be clarified by the state government. The copy of the queries raised on the said file is released to the media.
