For the upcoming Punjab assembly elections, Congress has fielded Charanjit Singh Channi from Chamkaur Sahib. At present, Channi is the chief minister of Punjab. Prior to being appointed the chief minister of Punjab, Channi was the Minister of Technical Education and Training in the second Amarinder Singh ministry. He had also been the leader of opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly. In September 2021, Charanjit Singh Channi succeeded Captain Amarinder Singh as the chief minister of Punjab after the latter's resignation. With this, Channi became the first Dalit Sikh Chief Minister of Punjab. Several policy announcements were made by Channi soon after he took charge at the office. On September 21, Channi promised action concerning a sacrilege case and said that the electricity bills of waterworks schemes would be waived and connections would be restored. On September 23, Channi said "Class D" government jobs would be regularised - (they were previously outsourced). During this while, Channi was surrounded by criticism from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as the latter commented on his attire and also told him to buy clothes. On the personal front, Channi was born in the village of Makrauna Kalan, Punjab. He read law at Panjab University completed his MBA from PTU, Jalandhar. He belongs to the Dalit Sikh community.

On the complaint of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a case has been filed under section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for violating the model code of conduct against Channi and Sidhu.
The "Bhaiya controversy" emerged after the Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi made a controversial remark asking the people of the state not to let the "bhaiyas" of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar enter the state.
Priyanka Gandhi said that the BJP and AAP are contesting polls in Punjab only to 'fulfil their own desires' but the wave here is in the favour of the grand old party.
On Wednesday, Channi had held an election event in Punjab's Ropar, alongside Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, where he made the remark on people from UP and Bihar.
Channi courted controversy during a rally in poll-bound Punjab by asking people not to let the "bhaiyas" of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi "rule" the state.
PM Narendra Modi said that Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has insulted the people of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar with his 'bhaiya' remark and added that such people have no right to rule.
Lashing out at the Congress, Yogi Adityanath said that the day labourers from UP stop going to other states for work, 'the Congress government would know what the situation would be there'.
Channi questioned AAP on how can anyone give command of Punjab to such a person.
BJP has accused Punjab CM Channi of insulting people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and attacked Priyanka saying Congress wants to divide the people of the country.
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal feels that he and Aam Aadmi Party's CM candidate from Punjab Bhagwant Mann are being targeted by rival parties as they do not want an honest government.
"This is our Punjab and this is safe in our hands. Charanjit Channi is a Chief Minister, he's not a terrorist," he said while speaking to media persons.
Rahul Gandhi also promised that the drug problem would be wiped out from Punjab if his party returns to power. He added Punjab is a "sensitive" state, and it is only Congress that knows how to protect peace in the state.
Addressing an election rally, Congress leader Sunil Jakhar alleged that Channi's chopper was not given permission for Hoshiarpur. The Congress party has asked the election commission to intervene.
Slamming the Arvind Kejriwal-led party, he said the AAP gave tickets to 44 people who came from other political parties. "Every third and fourth candidate of the AAP is facing criminal cases," Channi charged.
Channi has also been declared as Congress' Chief Ministerial face for the upcoming polls. Punjab will go to the polls on February 20.
Taking a dig at Kejriwal, Channi said that the government is "not formed on the basis of lies."
During poll meetings in Balachaur and Rupnagar, Nadda trained his guns at the ruling Congress over the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He alleged that Congress members were involved in the riots.
In an exclusive conversation with India TV, Navjot Kaur, wife of Navjot Singh Sidhu said her husband would have been a better choice for the CM candidate for Punjab in upcoming assembly election.
To give a further boost to the NDA campaign in Punjab, the prime minister will address three rallies on February 14, 16, and 17, state BJP general secretary Subash Sharma said.
