Former finance minister Arun Jaitley breathed his last on August 24, 2019. He was 66. Jaitley had been undergoing treatment at the AIIMS for several weeks. In the Vajpayee government (1998–2004), he held the cabinet portfolios of Finance, Corporate Affairs, Commerce and Industry and Law and Justice. Since 1991, he has been a member of the national executive of BJP and became the spokesperson of the saffron party during the period preceding the 1999 Lok Sabha election. From 2009 to 2014 he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. He is also a senior advocate in the Supreme Court. Since 1987, he has been practicing law before the Supreme Court of India and several High Courts in the country. Early life: In 1973, Arun Jaitley graduated with a honours degree in commerce, BCom from Shri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi. In 1977, he passed his LLB degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. At the Delhi University, Jaitley was an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) student leader and in 1974, rose to be the President of the Students Union of Delhi University. He was under preventive detention for a period of 19 months during the period of proclamation of Internal Emergency (1975–77). After getting out of jail, he joined the Jan Sangh.

Goyal, who was given the charge of the finance ministry temporarily recently, presented the Budget 2019-20 in absence of Jaitley, who is away in New York for medical treatment.
Jaitley, who is recuperating after a surgery in a hospital in the US, on Twitter said one of the reasons for "poor" conviction rate in India is that "adventurism and megalomania" overtakes investigators and professionalism takes a back seat.
Piyush Goyal will also continue to retain existing portfolios of Railways, Coal and Corporate Affairs.
It is pertinent to mention here that all these developments have come at a time when Lok Sabha elections 2019 is just a few months away.
The finance minister's remarks come in the backdrop of an Indian cyber expert, who is seeking political asylum in the US, claiming that the 2014 general election was "rigged" through EVMs, which are prone to hacking.
This will be the last budget of the current BJP-led NDA government before the General Elections.
“The Kolkata rally organized by Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee was significant. On the surface, it was an anti-Modi rally. It indeed was. More significantly it was also a non-Rahul Gandhi rally,” he said.
In a Facebook blog titled-The Compulsive Contrarian and his Manufactured Logic-without naming Congress or other opposition parties, Jaitley said, nations are built by those with positive mindsets and a national vigor, not by the 'Compulsive Contrarians'.
The finance minister further claimed that the 10 per cent reservation would neither contravene the basic structure of the Constitution nor would it be restricted by the 50 per cent reservation cap placed by the Supreme Court.

The minister also said that in recent past, Rs 90,000 crore was allocated in the Union Budget and infused in various PSBs by the government during financial year 2017-18.
By repeating his allegations, Rahul is trying hard so that at least one corruption charge against the Modi government could stick.
In an obvious reference to former PM Indira Gandhi, Jaitley called Rahul Gandhi 'the grandson of the Emergency dictator' and slammed the top Congress leader for intimidating an 'independent Editor'.
Jaitley shooted out a series of tweets in apparent attack on the Congress President, asking “How much does he know? When will be know?”
