Anil Vij is the senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and the former Home Minister of Haryana. Vij contested his first Assembly election from the Ambala Cantonment constituency in 1990 when Sushma Swaraj left the seat and became a Rajya Sabha member. He won the byelection. In the 1991 Haryana polls, Vij was defeated by Congress candidate Brij Anand by 8,017 votes. In 1996 and 2000, Anil Vij stood as an independent candidate and won on both occasions. In the 1996 polls, Vij defeated Congress candidate Raj Rani by 6,090 votes. In the 2000 elections, Vij won the seat by defeating the BJP's Kabir Dev with a margin of 9,057 votes. However, he lost the election in 2005 against Congress candidate Devender Kumar by just 615 votes. Vij returned to the BJP and won three consecutive elections in 2009, 2014, and 2019. He held several ministries, including Home, Urban Development, Technical Education, Science and Technology, Health, Medical Education, AYUSH, Sports, and Youth Affairs, in the Manohar Lal Khattar government from 2014 to 2024. He is again contesting from the Ambala Cantt constituency in the 2024 Haryana Assembly polls.

Anil Vij, was put on oxygen support on Friday after his oxygen levels dipped alarmingly.
Anil Vij, without taking any names, said that some officers were obstructing his departmental works to create misunderstanting with the CM.
Anil Vij's reaction amid Punjab Congress' infighting has come when speculations are rising that Navjot Singh Sidhu may switch sides again.
Vij further slammed Congress for supporting farmers and said Congress supports all those who want to destroy the unity and integrity of the nation.
"Two global tenders for the supply of one crore doses of Covid vaccine and 15,000 vials of amphotericin floated by Haryana Medical Services Corpn Ltd," Vij said in a tweet.
The daily COVID-19 positivity rate has reduced and now stands at 9.54 per cent, while the single-day recoveries continue to outnumber the new cases for the 12th consecutive day, the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday.
The state government has decided to impose lockdown in the state to arrest the spread of COVID-19.
The Haryana government has extended Covid lockdown till May 17.
Making the announcement on Twitter, Home and Health Minister Anil Vij said, "Mahamari Alert / Surkshit Haryana announced from 10 May to 17 May. Stringent measures will be taken to contain spread of Corona in Haryana. Detailed order to be issued soon."
"Control and management of all Oxygen Generation Plants should be handed over to military or paramilitary forces for safety and smooth functioning of the plants," Vij said in a tweet.
Haryana on Saturday registered its biggest single-day jump of 125 deaths due to COVID-19, raising the toll to 4,341, while 13,588 fresh cases pushed the infection count to 5,01,566.
"This govt does not have any right to stay in power. Forget about providing the basic needs to the people, they have even failed to give them emergency services," Chautala told on Tuesday.
He said extra beds are being created at hospitals for infection patients and rejected the allegations that an oxygen tanker was stopped from going to Punjab.
The minister's statement comes in the wake of a serious oxygen crisis in the national capital due to a steep rise in COVID-19 cases. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had on Tuesday urged the Centre "with folded hands" to provide medical oxygen to Delhi.
After deleting a controversial tweet by Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij on Monday related to 21-year-old climate activist Disha Ravi, Twitter later restored it, saying the tweet is "not subject to removal" under its rules regarding online hate speech.
The minister is getting treatment under Dr Sushila Kataria, senior director of Internal Medicine Department at Medanta, sources told IANS, adding that the minister is suffering from lung infection.
Anil Vij was shifted from Civil Hospital at Ambala to PGIMS on Saturday night after he complained of discomfort. He had tested positive for COVID-19 on December 5.
Vij, who had last month got one shot of the two-dose trial of the COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin after he offered to be a volunteer, had on December 5 tested positive for the coronavirus.
Anil Vij had offered to be the first volunteer in the phase three trials for Covaxin, an indigenous potential vaccine against COVID-19 being developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
