Sri Lanka announced a 16-man squad for the upcoming three-match T20 series against India with a new captain following Wanindu Hasaranga's relinquishment from the post. India will take on Sri Lanka in six white-ball matches starting with three T20Is in Pallekele with the opener on July 27.

Angelo Mathews won the Player of the Match (POTM) award for his all-round efforts. He played a quick-fire knock of 42 off 22 balls and claimed figures of 2/9 to play a key role in Sri Lanka's win.

"The Sri Lanka Cricket Selectors took this decision in order to ensure that the team has ready replacements in place to face contingencies, such as an injury to an existing squad member. Accordingly, Angelo Mathews and Dushmantha Chameera will join the team tomorrow," SLC statement said.

Since January 2021, the inception of the POTM (Players of the Month) award, Mathews is the first Sri Lankan player to get his hands on the title. Elated by the title Mathews said "I am honored and delighted to be the ICC Men’s Player of the Month. 

Mathews, a veteran of 386 internationals, last represented Sri Lanka in April this year in the two-Test series at home against Bangladesh.

SLC clarified that Mathews was not in the contracted players' list because he is "currently unavailable for selection".

The 34-year-old Mathews was not a part of the squad that toured England recently and last played the Test series against Bangladesh in April.

Mathews is considering the step after him and Test captain Dimuth Karunaratne found themselves excluded from the contracts that were offered to Sri Lankan players.
