New Delhi: With exit polls projecting a decisive victory for Aam Aadmi Party in the Delhi Assembly elections, prices of brooms in the capital has risen sharply owing to heavy demand from party workers.  The price of a broom which ranges between Rs 40 and Rs 60 in various markets of the capital has gone up to at least Rs 100 leading to a boom in its sales.

“Last night, there were some brooms in my shop but now can you spot any? The last piece I sold for Rs 120,” said a shopkeeper in central Delhi's Gole Market.

Echoing him, another shopkeeper Antharam said, “I have sold a number of brooms in the last two days and a handful are left. When I asked the distributor in the morning to supply some, he said, not a single broom will be available before a week.”

During the Lok Sabha elections in 2014, brooms reportedly went missing in Varanasi where AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal was pitted against BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

“This time broom will sweep the city. Prices of brooms have really gone up. Whatever stock is left won't even last tonight,” a shopkeeper in west Delhi's Naraina said.

In areas such as Sant Nagar in South Delhi, Lajpat Nagar and C R Park price of a broom has touched a staggering Rs 150.  A similar trend could be seen in North Delhi's Burari where the prices have gone up by Rs 20-30.

“What will I do, the distributor could not supply me what I need, I had to increase the price.

I don't want to go into politics but yes I am selling brooms for Rs 30 more,” said a shopkeeper of the area.
