Who is interested in Arun Jaitley's phone call records?

New Delhi, Feb 20: Charges of Phone tapping has been rocking Indian politics since long.Many politicians have leveled charges of violation of their privacy by the government of the day in the past although it has always been very difficult to prove such charges. But this time, the allegations are serious as it involves the leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley. This time the case does not relate to phone tapping, instead, it is all about illegal access to the call data records of Jaitley. The details that have tumbled out of police investigation are rather baffling. Four people have been arrested in this case. Out of these four, one person is a police constable while three others are private detectives. The government, as expected, has washed its hands off the entire affair. The involvement of a serving police constable and two private detectives has made the case mysterious. Private detectives are mainly used either by rivals or corporate players. On the other hand, the involvement of a police constable deflects the suspicion towards the government agencies. Notwithstanding the denials of higher ups in police department, nothing can be ruled out. How can a police constable even dare to use the login and password of an assistant Commissioner of Police for obtaining the call records? The chain of events suggests that the story is not as simple as it looks. The investigation has revealed that the constable had accessed the BJP leader's data three times in the past, and he was only caught the fourth time because he mentioned the name of the Jaitley and his son next to their telephone numbers. The question is why would a police constable keep a tab on call records of Jaitely and he succeeded all the time he demanded the call records from the telecom operator. The police constable, Arvind Dabas, has reportedly told Police that he needed call records of Jaitley for his personal reasons. And the personal reason cited is so flimsy that it hardly needs any serious attention. According to the constable's story, an Uttarakhand based property dealer had promised him to settle a property deal in the state with the help of Jaitley as he knew the BJP leader very closely. The constable needed call details of Jaitley to verify whether the property dealer actually knew Jaitely. Just to ascertain the acquaintance of a property dealer with Jaitley, would a police constable take the risk of impersonating as an ACP while demanding the call details of no less than a constitutional functionary like the leader of opposition in the Rajya sabha? The involvement of private detectives could well be an indication of involvement of corporate players. Arun Jaitley is India's one of the top most corporate lawyers and a dirty corporate game can'tbe ruled out as well.According to the Police, one of the arrested private detectives has claimed that he needed call data records to check on the character of prospective grooms and brides but the investigations suggest that the detective, Neeraj Ram, had paid the constable, Dabas, in the past to get data related to people who are very powerful and do not fit into any matrimonial story. Not only this, the duo of the political constable Arvind Dabas and the private detective Neeraj Ram had been accessing call data records for the last nine months but it was in the last two months that they began seeking more data. The two other arrested private detectives are Nitish and Anurag. Intrusion into telephonic conversation of political leaders has always created controversies in Indian politics. We had instances where the government of the day had to go because of phone tapping accusations. Therefore, it becomes essential to completely decipher the mystery behind the illegal access to the CDR of Jaitley.Is Jaitley the only political person whose CDR has been illegally obtained or it's a big list? The police says the list includes around a dozen prominent people. In that case it's a big racket and is not possible without inside help of those who are in authority. The BJP has already intensified its attack on the government and has demanded explanation from the home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde. The party has went on to the extent of reminding the government that the excess committed during emergency should not be revisited. The principal opposition party may be justified in venting its anger over the Jaitley CDR case but there is no point in jumping the gun at this point. Let the government order a full-fledged and credible enquiry by an independent agency so that nobody could accuse the govt of any hidden agenda. That will be in the wider interest of Indian polity as well.
