Mumbai: A senior leader of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad supported Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's proposal that Bhagvad Gita be granted the status of 'national scripture'.
"Bhagvad Gita is the greatest scripture in the world. We support Sushmaji over her statement," VHP functionary Venkatesh Abdeo said here on Tuesday.
Several political parties have criticised Swaraj, saying that her view is against the secular mores of the Indian constitution.
Speaking at ‘Gita Prerna Mahotsav', organised to celebrate 5,151 years of religious book Gita at the Red Fort Maidan in New Delhi, Swaraj had said that the Centre should declare Bhagwad Gita as a ‘Rashtriya Granth' (national scripture).
