Lucknow: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Saturday  said it has proposed to Mulayam Singh Yadav to work as a bridge between Hindus and Muslims to pave way for Ram Temple construction, and claimed the SP leader has responded positively.

"We reminded Mulayam Singh of his announcement that the day court will say that Babri mosque was constructed after demolishing some structure, he will support construction of the temple," VHP leader Ashok Singhal and Swami Chinmayanand said after meeting Mulayam and his son Akhilesh.

They met Mulayam and Akhilesh in connection with the proposed Chaurasi Kosi Parikrama of seers on August 25.

"We told him that among all leaders, his acceptability among Muslims is maximum and he should act as a bridge and initiate the process, which he accepted," they said, adding that both the leaders were very positive during the meeting.

"During the meeting, the SP supremo agreed that it took a long time for the court's decision to come and in wake of the High Court judgement there should be a dialogue," they said.

Chinmayanand said a group of seers had met President Pranab Mukherjee in May this year, and "told him about an affidavit submitted in Supreme Court in 1994 by the then Solicitor General, in which it was said that if the mosque was constructed after demolishing any structure, then government will stand in favour of construction of the temple."

They demanded that the Centre should pave way for construction of the temple through a legislation, and thretened of an agitation if a bill was not tabled in Parliament by September 18.
