Be it Katrina Kaif's Rajneeti or Amitabh Bachan's Aarakshan, they were all blockbusters but they all had their own share of controversies. Political drama and satire have always been a great topic for movie makers. It's interesting to note that in a country mired by scams, corruption and exploitative politics, such movies are subjected to threats of being banned or censored. Rajneeti: It's a bloody battle for political power between the rival suitor of the Pratap family.This movie was released in 2010. It is a political drama that takes inspiration from Mahabharata and Mario Puzo's The Godfather. Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Arjun Rampal, Ajay Devgan, Nana Patekar, Manoj Bajpayee, Naseeruddin Shah were the stars. Each one of them performed incredibly. For Katrina this was a rather different role that she carried with dignity. Critically the movie was well received, and earned about 143 crores at the Box Office. It had portrayed the murkiness and the tricks of politicians and the struggle very well.Rajneeti is another spectacular show of its Director – Prakash Jha. 2. Sarkar Raj: Starring the three Bachchans, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan this movie was a sequel to Sarkar. It was an extension to the story of Subhash Nagre's political clout but with more focus on his son Shankar and daughter-in-law Anita Rajan.Sarkar was inspired from Mario Puzo's The Godfather but not Sarkar Raj. This movie was based on the true political situations prevailing in India. Critics appreciated the movie and it was a commercial success.Sarkar Raj was released in 2008. 3. Yuva: Yuva was directed by Mani Ratnam. It was made both in Hindi and English. Yuva showed the need for revolutionizing Indian politics. It inspires the youth to take more interest in politics.It was a story of positive impact of student politics and how the influence can trigger a much needed change in the system.The movie revolves around three young men and how their lives change after an incident.Yuva was not successful commercially. Vivek Oberoi, Kareena Kapoor and Esha Deol were also a part of this film. 4. Rann: Rann is actually based on the war between media barons. The is a viewpoint that media is losing its objectivity and ethics. Rann dwelled on these aspects. The film shows a strong connection between politics and press.This movie gives an account of a corrupt politician and rotates around the world of media. Stars like Amitabh Bacchan, Ritesh Deshmukh and Gul Panag played important roles. It is a poignant tale of three college students who are caught between ambition, love and politics. The story is placed against the backdrop of the Emergency period of India that was placed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.This movie is based on socio – political condition of India. The title of this film has been taken from a veteran Urdu poet, Mirza Ghalib's poem. 6. Kalyug: Kalyug had striking similarity with the epic Mahabharta. It depicted the typical rivalry between business houses. The film bagged the Filmfare award for best film in the year 1982. The movie was well crafted and has a beautifully paced.Actors of the Golden period of Bollywood performed in this film. It had some fantastic performances. Its fiery content showed Anurag Kashyap's most consistent efforts and established him as one of the finest film makers of the decade.Gulal did not earn much profit but it was highly appreciated. Some other actors in this film were Mahi Gill, Jesse Randhawa, Raj Singh Chaudhary, Abhimanyu Singh. 8. Satta: This film tells the tale of a woman who is leading a simple and normal life. She changes from head to toe after marriage. She is forced into politics.Satta reflects the Indian mindset and how women are used according to the whims of men. Most of the men are in constant hunt for their share of power.Satta is the portrayal of the connection between the underworld, businessmen, corrupt policemen and politicians.Satta was a socio-political thriller. It had career best performances by Raveena Tandon and Atul Kulkarni.Madhur Bhandarkar did an exemplary job in terms of direction. 9. Aandhi: Directed by Gulzar, this movie was speculated to be based on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The songs of the movie were a blockbuster hit. Aandhi was banned from full release during the Emergency while Indira Gandhi was in power. But after Indira Gandhi's defeat in the 1977 general elections, the Janta Party government that came to power allowed the movie to be premiered on television.Aandhi can be compared to Rajneeti. This movie was inspired by freedom fighter Tarkeshwari Sinha too.Aandhi is considered the best film based on politics. It is a highly controversial one too.Suchitra Sen and Sanjeev Kumar delivered spectacular performances. Aandhi also has some of Gulzar and RD Burman`s best compositions. Shool: This movie revolves around an honest police officer and portrays the ill effects of criminalization of politics in the state of Bihar.This film was released in 1999 and was directed by E Niwas. The script of this film was written by Ram Gopal Verma. Manoj Bajpai's performance in the lead role grabbed the show completely. He played the role of Inspector Pratap Singh. Sayaji Shinde played the role of a psychopath criminal-politician Bachhu Yadav. Many movies have been made on honest policemen but none of them were as well received at Shool.The film won National Film Award.
