9. Sri Ranasinghe Premadasa, the 3rd President of Sri Lanka
Premadasa was killed on 1st May 1993 during a rally. An LTTE suicide bomber detonated explosives strapped to his body during a May Day political rally. Over 10 people were killed in the explosion that took place in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo. The dead included President Premdasa's bodyguards and confidantes. Several people were severely injured.
Though the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam deny involvement, these Tamil rebels had waged a 10 year secessionist war that has claimed thousands of lives, including several prominent figures killed in suicide bombings.
Ranasinghe Premadasa, was born on 23 June 1924. Before becoming the President he served as the Prime minister from 6 February 1978 till 1st January 1989.
Premadasa was a down to earth man. He led a humble life in his home and didn't occupy the luxurious official residence that had been allotted to him.
He originally planned to be a journalist, and translated an autobiography of Jawaharlal Nehru into Sinhala.
