Bengaluru:  After noted playwright Girish Karnad, BJP MP from Kodagu district in Mysore, Pratap Simha has now claimed of receiving death threat.

Pratap Simha filed a complaint today in which the BJP MP has claimed that he has received a death threat for opposing the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan.

BJP MP Pratap Simha had earlier accused the state government of trying to spread hatred  by celebrating Tipu Sultan's birth anniversary.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has given a call for ‘Karnataka bandh' tomorrow and the BJP has decided to extend support to this bandh.

The VHP is opposing Congress government's decision to honour Tipu Sultan because it considers Tipu  a tyrant who persecuted Hindus and Christians.

Earlier, playwright Girish Karnad received a death threat for saying that Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport should be renamed  after 18th century Mysore king Tipu Sultan.

"I feel that if Tipu Sultan was a Hindu and not a Muslim he would have attained the position in Karnataka that Shivaji Maharaj enjoys in Maharashtra," Karnad had said.

He added that it would be better  if the Kempegowda Airport is renamed after Tipu Sultan instead of Kempegowda.

"Kempegowda was never a freedom fighter. Still, the Bengaluru International airport has been named against him. Instead, it should have been named against Tipu Sultan,”  Karnard had added.

Bengaluru Police also confirmed that they had received a complaint against Karnad for 'insulting Hindus and the Vokkaliga community (to which Kempegowda belonged to) and disrupting social harmony'.

Protests against the state-sponsored celebrations have led to violence in Karnataka where a VHP activist succumbed to his injuries.
