New Delhi, Sep 29: BJP today attacked Congress leader Digvijay Singh for his statement that it should "realise 2010 is not 1992" and practice restraint, saying he should not make "irresponsible comments" and stay within limits of propriety.

"On the one hand, the government appeals for peace (after the Ayodhya verdict) and on the other hand, some Congress leaders like Digvijay Singh make sympathetic statements on Naxals and have been in the news for favouring terrorists," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said.

The Lok Sabha MP alleged that at times even the Congress finds it difficult to "rein in" Singh and warned that he should not make comments which lead to a "breach of peace".

"He has held a responsible post once. Though that was a long time ago, he should not go beyond the limits of propriety after leaving office," Hussain said, referring to Singh's tenure as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh.

Singh had said yesterday that the BJP should realise that 2010 was not 1992 when the Babri Masjid was demolished and asked the party to "restrain" its cadre.

"I hope BJP would realise that 2010 is not 1992...They should restrain their cadres from indulging in violence," Singh, who is AICC General Secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, had said.

He had also charged senior BJP leader L K Advani of "vitiating the communal atmosphere" of the country in 1992 and alleged that he has again brought up the issue of Ram temple in his statement in Somnath which "he did not do when he was the Home Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister of the country".

"BJP's relationship with Ram is limited to elections. What was BJP doing (for Ram temple) when it was in power. They have only tried to use the issue politically," Singh had said.

Hussain was reacting to this statement today. He appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony and said his party had always respected court verdicts.

"People should hear the verdict with patience and accept it with patience," he said

The Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court will come out with its judgement on the Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit tomorrow.

"Singh should stop making nonsensical statements.... He had bowled many no-balls in the past. He should play a fair game now," Hussain said. PTI
