New Delhi: Congress chief Sonia Gandhi will not attend next month's anointment ceremony of the son of Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari.
A Congress spokesman said that there was no information about the invitation but the party chief will not attend even if invited.
The move is seen as a very curt response to the controversy by Bukhari's announcement that he will not invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi but had extended the invite to Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif.
By inviting Sharif, Bukhari created confusion about the Muslims in the country and gave a negative image to the whole community.
Speaking to a news channel, Bukhari had demanded that Modi should first tender apology for the Gujarat riots and added that ‘Muslims of India do not recognize Narendra Modi as their leader, hence the invite has not been sent.'
“He may have been elected the PM, but the Muslims of India do not accept him,” he said.
