Tharoor's political journey began in 2009 when he contested elections as a Congress candidate from Kerala's capital Thiruvananthapuram. Having spent quite a considerable amount of time outside India, Tharoor faced opposition in his initial days of his political journey. However, he won the elections defeating P. Ramachandaran Nair of the Left Front. He was made Minister of State for External Affairs soon. He had to resign because of the IPL Kochi franchise controversy, but he has been reappointed Minister of State for HRD.
