New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today made a statement in the upper house of the parliament on union minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti's controversial statement  and clarified that the concerned minister has already apologized for her remarks.

Modi, however, said that there is a need for everybody to desist from making such statements . He also said that it should be ensured that nobody crosses the line in future.

Modi said that since the minister has apologised, the house should be allowed to function now .

"Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti has apologised... the house should gracefully accept that and carry forward its business in national interest," Modi said in the upper house.

"I strongly disapprove it and have told MPs that they should be careful and avoid making such statements".

"...we should refrain from making such statements and using such language."

"I believe that the people sitting here are so experienced that they very well understand the feeling behind the apology," Modi said.

The minister reportedly said at a public meeting here: "Aapko tay karna hai ki Dilli mein sarkar Ramzadon ki banegi ya haramzadon ki." (You have to decide if you want a government in Delhi to be led by the children of Lord Ram or illegitimate children).

The upper house, which had already witnessed one adjournment before the prime minister's statement, however continued to be disrupted by opposition members who refused to relent and said the minister should be sacked.

Responding to Modi's statement, CPM leader Sitaram Yechury  said that since the minister has apologized, it means that she had violated the constitution and therefore she should resign.

But the parliamentary affairs minister M Venkaiah Naidu said that the house has already discussed the entire issue and the PM has made a statement, the matter should be closed. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also said that after PM's statement, the matter should be closed.
