During 1991 economic crisis, Manmhan Singh emerged as a savior for the country. He was appointed as the Finance Minister by then Prime Minister P.V Narsimha Rao. Singh introduced several reforms that helped the plunging economy of India to recover. But despite Manmohan Singh's radical reforms, Congress failed miserably in the 1996 general elections. Manmohan Singh next, became the leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's rule.
