New Delhi: A senior official of one of the city's municipal corporations was today suspended and another shunted out for alleged dereliction of duty after Home Minister Rajnath Singh paid a surprise visit to the civic body's office today to see its work.

North Delhi Municipal Corporation today relieved Hemendra Kumar, Deputy Commissioner (city zone), of his responsibility with immediate effect and repatriated him to his parent Indian Railway Traffic service.

Sanitation Superintendent of NDMC's city zone Mohan Singh has been placed under suspension by NDMC, an official spokesperson said tonight.

The move came hours after the Home Minister made a surprise visit to the NDMC's city zone office at Asaf Ali Marg where he found the Deputy Commissioner absent.

Even though the DC arrived later, the Home Minister expressed his displeasure over lack of uncleanliness in the office and employees "lack of interests" in keeping documents in order.

The Home Minister also directed the DC to take urgent steps for cleanliness, remove unused articles like computers and improve people's facilities and service.

"Today, I realised why people are unhappy with MCD," Singh later told Jung.

Delhi is currently under President's rule and Assembly poll in the national capital is likely to be held early next year.

The Home Minister also conducted surprise checks at various public places, including a hospital, a police station, a railway station and the municipal office, to take stock of cleanliness and other problems faced by the people there.

Accompanied by Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and Police Commissioner B S Bassi, Singh visited a public toilet at New Delhi railway station to see its cleanliness, the Shivaji Stadium bus stop to inquire about passengers' convenience, frequency of buses and Paharganj police station to get a first-hand knowledge about complaints and cleanliness in lockups.

"I am paying the visits to personally see what is happening in these places and assess the overall situation in the city. I am satisfied with the working of some places while in some places there is a need for improvement of services," Singh told PTI.

Singh brushed aside the suggestion that the surprise visits were carried out keeping an eye on coming assembly polls in the national capital.
