New Delhi: Investigation into the suicide of a farmer from Rajasthan at an AAP rally has been handed over to the crime branch and the Delhi Police has been asked to give a report in the matter in a time-bound manner, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday.
"I condole the death of the farmer on behalf of the entire government," Rajnath Singh said in the Lok Sabha after a short discussion on the issue.
Singh said while he appreciated leaders who have said that the issue should not be politicized, it should be introspected as to why the situation of farmers has deteriorated over the years.
He said according to information given by Delhi Police, Gajendra Singh climbed the tree with a broom and hanged himself. Police had called for a fire brigade so that they could climb up the tree.
It had also asked people present there not to clap and further instigate the man, the home minister said.
Gajendra Singh, who hailed from Rajasthan, hanged himself from a tree in central Delhi's Jantar Mantar on Wednesday.
He was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
