Lucknow, Dec 10: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi today said it was for the first time after 1991 that the party was contesting polls in Uttar Pardesh in a “real sense” and appealed to party workers to work unitedly and ensure its victory.

“The first move towards seriously contesting the polls was made in 2009, and now in 2012 the party will be fighting it out in the real sense,” he said.

Rahul said all the poll promises made by his party like MGNREGS, different development packages, Land Acquisition Bill and Food Security Bill among others had been fulfilled.

Now the promise of reservation made to minorities was also going to be fulfilled, the Congress leader, on a two-day visit to UP, told PCC members and presidents of district and city units of the party.

Rahul said they had the capability to form the next government in Uttar Pradesh and the only requirement for it was a firm resolve in this regard.

“You have the capability to form the next government in UP and if you make a firm resolve, it will definitely be formed.”

Referring to non-Congress governments in UP, Rahul said during the tenure of BSP, SP and other parties the state had lagged behind.

On inflation, he said some people had told him that it was a major issue and asked whether controlling prices was not the responsibility of the BSP government.

The FDI was meant to control the price rise but the BSP opposed it strongly, Rahul said.

He said the progress of the Congress in Uttar Pradesh was in the interest of all and asked partymen to work unitedly and ensure its victory.

Rahul will undertake a five-day tour from December 13 in seven districts of poll-bound Uttar Pradesh.
