Noida, Jun 19 : As part of the celebrations to mark Rahul Gandhi's birthday, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi today visited violence-hit Bhatta Parsaul village where the Amethi MP had sat on a 16-hour dharna, taking up cudgels for farmers over land acquisition issue.
“Rahul Gandhi is the voice of the farmers and the poor people. He was always in the forefront in taking up the cause of the oppressed,” she said addressing the farmers.
Joshi also visited Gautam Budha Nagar and joined the Kisan chaupals (farmer gatherings) organised by the district Congress at various villages as part of the Congress scion's birthday celebrations.
Joshi, who reached Kasna area here at around 11.30 am, met around 22 farmers who were recently released on bail from jail and observed a two-minute silence for those killed during the agitation.
“Even in Bundelkhand where farmers die of hunger it was Rahul who had gone there and extended support to them and provided relief,” she added.
Joshi said that Rahul's commitment for the farmers' cause was seen when, unfazed by rain and dirt, he had reached Bhatta Parsaul village and held a dharna for 16 hours and allayed the fear of farmers and their families who were living under terror after police firing.
She promised the farmers that a Land Acquisition Amendment Bill would be introduced in the Parliament soon. PTI
