Nagpur, Nov 2: Elections to the 196 MunicipalCouncils in Maharashtra will be held on December 8, the State Election Commission announced.
The tenure of most of the Municipal Councils and Municipal Panchayats was due to end between December 2011 and February 2012 and therefore the elections of these civic bodies has been scheduled for December 8, State Election Commissioner Neela Satyanarayan told reporters here today. She said since Latur and Chandrapur Municipal Councils have been upgraded to Municipal Corporations, there will be no election in these two present Municipal Councils.
A total of 4,303 seats would be at stake, with 50 percent reservation for women, during the elections. The election process will commence from November 16 with the opening of nominations till November 22. Scrutiny of papers would be done on November 23 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is November 29, Satyanarayan said. Counting of votes would be taken up immediately after polling is over or in some case the next day, she added. The model code of conduct comes into immediate effect.
