Chennai: The executive committee meeting of NDA ally PMK today strongly favoured projecting former Union Minister Anbumani Ramadoss as the party's Chief Minsiterial candidate for the 2016 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.

Taking part in the deliberations, the functionaries wanted anointment of Anbumani as Chief ministerial candidate.

In a party meeting in August, several PMK leaders favoured Anbumani to be made the party's official candidate for chief ministership and let the formalisation to the party executive and general council meetings.

At today's meeting, the functionaries also said the party should lead a separate front as a real alternative to Dravidian parties.

A formal resolution on naming Anbumani as Chief Ministerial candidate is likely to be adopted at the general council tomorrow, party sources said.

In his address to the party executive, Anbumani, a Lok Sabha member, said the present poltical situation in Tamil Nadu was similar to that of 1967, when people, disillusioned with Congress had handed a landslide win for the DMK and its allies.

“AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa has been convicted and sent to jail.

People have no faith in DMK as well after 2G spectrum scandal,” he said, adding, “They are looking for a credible alternative and PMK alone will be able to provide it.” On November 3, PMK chief Ramadoss said his party would not align with either AIADMK or DMK for the 2016 Assembly polls.

A coalition of political parties headed by PMK sans AIADMK and DMK would be formed, he had said.

His clarification came after talks of a possible political realignment surfaced following participation of DMK President M Karunanidhi in the wedding of PMK founder's granddaughter Samyuktha.

Ramadoss said he invited the DMK chief only out of political decency.
