New Delhi: Amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi's concerns over call drops, the standing committee on information technology and telecom has decided to take up the issue during its next meeting.

BJP MP and standing committee chief Anurag Thakur informed that the panel will meet next week to discuss the issue and will submit a report before the Winter Session of Parliament.

He also sought the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) intervention into the matter to lay down certain guidelines on the number of telecom towers vis-a-vis subscriber base.

The Prime Minister had earlier, while reviewing the status of mobile connectivity in the country, expressed serious concern over the issue of call drops and observed that it directly affects the common man.

He had also asked officials as to what was being done to address the problem and directed them that steps be taken urgently to resolve the problem.

Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has already asked mobile operators to optimise their networks while promising full support on policy front including on installation of towers.

The problem of frequent call drops has worsened in the recent months. Telecom operators have cited shutting down of mobile towers and radiation fears, as also lack of spectrum, as the major reasons for call drops.
