Kohima, Jan 24 :  Over 31,000 personnel would look after security during the February 23 assembly elections in Nagaland.

This included 13,000 police, village guards and home guards personnel and 180 companies of central forces, Chief Electoral Officer, J Alam told a press conference here today.  Eleven police observers, one in each district, would be deployed, he said.

The police observers would ensure that security forces acted in an impartial manner, he said.  Another 35 observers, including 22 general observers and 13 expenditure observers would arrive in the state by January 30, Alam said.

One special observer would be stationed in Kohima to coordinate with the others.

In addition, 14161 polling persons would be deployed in 2023 polling stations in 60 Assembly constituencies in the 11 districts, he said.

He said the expenditure ceiling of a candidate was fixed at Rs 8 lakh and all political parties were asked to submit lists of their star campaigners before start of electioneering.

He also said that political parties would have to give an account of the election expenditure within 75 days of the polls.

He said an electorate of 11,92,377 would exercise their franchise to elect the 60 legislators to the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
