At an early age of 29, Omar was elected into 12th Lok Sabha in 1998 and became the youngest minister. In 2002, Omar took over his father's position and became the National Conference Party.

Omar lost his Ganderbal seat in Kashmir assembly elections in 2002. After being elected as the National Conference party president once again in 2006, Omar arranged a meeting with Pakistani President Parvez Musharraf despite much hostile response from the center.
