New Delhi: AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam is schedule to take oath as new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu today.
Earlier on Sunday, AIADMK legislators unanimously elected Panneerselvam to succeed Jayalalithaa, who is in a Bangalore jail following her conviction by a court in connection with a corruption case.
The decision was made known on Sunday evening after a meeting of the legislators at the party headquarters in Chennai.
According to a Raj Bhavan communique, Panneerselvam, who was Finance Minister in Jayalalithaa's Cabinet and represents Bodinayakanur constituency in the state Assembly, met Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah and submitted a letter and the resolution passed by the AIADMK legislators who chose him unanimously.
Panneerselvam had become Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu under similar circumstances in 2001 for a small stint.
A special court in Bangalore had on Saturday sentenced Jayalalithaa to four years in prison and fined her Rs 100 crore for amassing wealth illegally when she was the Chief Minister of the state between 1991 to 1996.
