New Delhi: The role of the Minority Affairs Ministry has become crucial at a time when a “political effort” is on to create a sense of mistrust among minorities, its newly-appointed Minister of State Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said today.

He said the Narendra Modi government though its principles of good governance will work towards providing “security and prosperity” to the minority communities of the country.  “The Minority Affairs Ministry has an important role to play. Its role becomes all the more crucial at a time when a political effort is being made to create a sense of mistrust among minorities,” he told reporters after assuming charge.

He, however, did not name any political party.  Naqvi said one of his priority areas would be to provide opportunities of development for the last man in queue without any discrimination.

“We have to keep away brokers and middlemen. People say much of the schemes have remained on paper and nothing is reflected on ground. I want the ministry to reach the people with its schemes... People are feeling secluded. That has to go,” he said.

The BJP Vice President said he would choose areas where he would focus and ensure a proper ground assessment of the works done by the ministry.

Before taking over, Naqvi met his senior minister Najma Heptulla.

He was inducted in the Union Council of Ministers on Sunday.
