New Delhi, Oct 7: Senior BJP leader L K Advani today said there could be some instances of shortcomings in some NDA-ruled states which are much highlighted, although they are examples of good governance and clean politics.

Advani, however, did not specify the states where these shortcomings existed.

He was addressing party workers from Delhi, who had gathered at his residence to felicitate him ahead of his 40-day Yatra against corruption and good governance starting October 11.

“We are happy that in the six years that we got an opportunity to rule the nation at the Centre, we gave an example of good governance. Even today, if NDA rules in nine states their governance and work is good.

“If there are one or two instances of shortcomings somewhere, it is much talked about. But, by and large the governance in NDA-rules states is good,” he said.

Advani said it was not just the issue of good governance that he aimed at spreading through his Yatra, but that of clean and honest politics also.

“We want to talk about politics through this yatra. It is not merely about good governance but also that of clean and honest politics,” he noted.

Talking about clean politics, Advani said there should be no wrong-doing in politics, while admitting that it is difficult to remain honest in politics.

“One should not do any wrong-doing in politics. It is difficult though to remain honest in politics. You need to have a strong character, discipline and patience in doing clean politics,” he said.

Advani went on to say the “onus lies on us that each party worker displays these elements in him, as otherwise the public will not spare us.”

The BJP leader lamented that “it is unfortunate that those who took over the reins of the nation, could not provide good governance and that is why the nation could not progress that much. Issues of poverty, illiteracy, unemployment and infrastructure thus remain.”

He added, “till there is good governance, the nation cannot progress.”

Earlier in his address, Advani said he did not want to say anything about his Yatra yet and will say things during the yatra. He, however, said, “the yatra is the best way to reach out to the people of the country”.

Stating that his yatra was not for any immediate purpose, Advani said he expected a transformation in the country as he was set to awaken the people about corruption, good governance and clean politics.

The BJP leader said the Yatra was an attempt to reach out to such people who did not attend rallies of political parties. “The yatra is like a political party reaching out to crores of such people,” he said.

The way corruption is increasing in this country, there is a need to awaken the masses in the country against the menace, said Advani. PTI
