Kohima: Counting of votes for the by-election to Northern Angami-II Assembly Constituency under Kohima district of Nagaland will be held tomorrow. By-election for the constituency was held in 39 polling stations across 30 villages under Chiephobozou sub-division on October 15, while repoll to one polling station at Rusoma village was held yesterday.
The Election Commission had earlier decided that counting of votes would be held today. However accepting the appeal of Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) and other civil societies to defer the date as today being a Sunday, the EC shifted it to October 20. The NBCC in its appeal had said Sunday is a day of worship for Christians and Nagaland has a predominantly Christian population.
Any important official proceedings, such as counting of votes being held on Sunday would not only disturb the worshippers, but would go against the religious sentiments of the Christians in Nagaland, the NBCC apprised the EC. The EVMs are being kept in the strong room with Central Paramilitary Forces maintaining a strong vigil, sources said.
The counting of votes would start at 8 AM at the Deputy Commissioner's Office-Kohima tomorrow, said Assistant Election Officer, Kohima, R Mhathung Ngullie.
