New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh today alleged that Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was “deeply involved” in the VYAPAM scam and demanded his resignation.

At the AICC briefing here, the Congress general secretary alleged deep involvement of Chouhan in the scandal and wanted the CBI to take over the probe. Singh also expressed doubt about the role played by Union minister Uma Bharati.

The VYAPAM is known in English as Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board which is a self-financed, autonomous incorporated body of the state government.  Satyadev Katare, the Leader of opposition in Madhya Pradesh Assembly, who also addressed the meet, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of shielding Chouhan.

Citing the example of L K Advani's resignation in the wake of the Hawala scam, Katare said the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister should also quit allowing a fair probe.  “The Chief Minister is involved. His family is involved in it and he should resign. We will request the Supreme Court to do justice. Justice is not possible as long as Shivraj Singh Chouhan is there,” Digvijay Singh said.

The Congress general secretary said the CBI should take over the probe, contending that the inquiry conducted by the Special Task Force was leading nowhere as it is accountable to the state police controlled by the Chief Minister.

Alleging that the scam had led to thousands of unqualified persons becoming doctors, Singh said if there was only one “Munnabhai” in the film “Munnabhai MBBS', “we have at least 1,000 Munnabhai MBBS in Madhya Pradesh medical colleges”.

If Om Prakash Chautala of INLD could be jailed for 300 forged recruitments, why no action against the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister? Singh asked.
