New Delhi: Hitting back at Congress over its criticism of the auctioning of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's suit, Union Minister Uma Bharti today said the party could not digest that a tea seller's suit has fetched crores of rupees.

“A tea seller has become a Prime Minister, whose suit is bringing crores of rupees and Congress, which is serving for the capitalists, could not digest it. They are wondering how could this happen. They are rattled,” Bharti told reporters on the sidelines of a public art innovation event here.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pinstripe monogrammed suit was auctioned for Rs 4.31 crore in Surat, a few days back.

The suit, said to be worth around Rs 10 lakh, had kicked up a political storm with the Opposition, particularly the Congress taking potshots at Modi over putting his pinstripe monogrammed bandhgala suit on the block and said the auction was a damage control exercise.

“I think the biggest problem of the opposition, especially for the Congress is that these things can be reserved only for the Nehru-Gandhi family,” the Water Resources Minister replied to a query on the opposition's criticism to the auction.

However, Bharti parried questions on the Vyapam scam, on which Congress has raised allegations against Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.  “I am not saying anything... I want to talk only about river Ganga,” the Union Minister stated.

Bharti also said that the cleaning of Ganga has been going on for the last 29 years and its is not like preparing “two-minute noodles”.

On pollution in the river, she said steps are being taken to upgrade Sewerage Treatment Plants.
