New Delhi: The top leadership of Congress may have disowned its own Prime Minister Narasimha Rao, the NDA govt led by Narendra Modi plans to pay respect to him by making a memorial in his memory at ‘Ekta Sthal' in New Delhi.

Narasimha  Rao lifted India from economic slowdown in 1991 through his industrial policy reforms with special focus on  manufacturing sector. He slashed industrial licensing, leaving only 18 industries subject to licensing. Industrial regulation was rationalised.

According to reports, the Union Urban Development ministry last week moved a proposal for cabinet approval to build a memorial ghat for the architect of the country's economic reforms at the Ekta Sthal Samadhi Complex. Ekta Sthal also houses the memorial of Congress leader Giani Zail Singh.

Last October, the TDP had moved a resolution urging the Centre to build a memorial for Rao, who hailed from Telangana.

In May 2013, the then Congress-led UPA government blocked demands for separate memorials, with the cabinet deciding to set up a common memorial ground — Rashtriya Smriti — in view of paucity of space.

It should be recalled that the body of Narasimha Rao was not allowed entry in the Congress headquarters at the behest of top leadership of the Congress which was annoyed with Rao for his approach towards Gandhi family during his tenure as Prime Minister.
