Lucknow, June 2: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Saturday said the parks and memorials built by the Mayawati government would be given to the poor for free for holding weddings and other ceremonies.
"Very soon, the memorials and parks built by the Mayawati government will be opened for the public. The poor would be able to use these places as wedding lawns. We will not levy any charge for it," the chief minister announced while addressing a rally in Chandauli, 350 km from here.
He also accused the previous Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government of plundering the state coffers and siphoning off funds.
Yadav said that his government had initially explored the possibility of converting these memorials into hospitals but officials advised him against it.
BSP leaders had recently met Governor B.L. Joshi to register their protest regarding the Samajwadi Party (SP) government's decision to use the parks and memorials built during the tenure of Mayawati for commercial purposes.
