New Delhi: BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi Thursday adopted south Delhi's Pilanji village under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day address.
Lekhi, who represents New Delhi, said she will adopt five more villages.
"Water, Sanitation, waste management, electricity and safety will be the focus areas. The aim is to resolve the day-to-day problems of the people residing in the area," Lekhi said at Pilanji, an urban village in the heart of the national capital.
"This is only the beginning; I am looking forward to adopt five more villages on the same pattern. We are pretty sure that this will be a successful project and will be replicated in other part of the country as well," said Lekhi.
Modi, in his speech from Red Fort, had announced the initiative, under which each MP would develop a model village in his area.
The programme will be launched Oct 11, the birth day of Jayaprakash Narayan.
Each MP will have to select a village in his constituency and develop it into a "model village" by 2016 under the programme. After that they will have to convert two more villages in model village before next Lok Sabha poll.
Lekhi said modern and alternative technologies such as water recycling, solar power etc will be introduced for better utilization of available recourses.
A committee consisting of experts from various areas - sanitation, waste management, architect, NGOs etc has been formed to ensure sustainable delivery of the project.
