After 9 years in office, Manmohan Singh's govt faces a nationwide anti-incumbency mood

New Delhi, May 20: Manmohan Singh's political life has been full of surprises. When he entered politics in 1991 as India's finance minister, little did he realize that he will one day create a record

The BJP, as expected, gives no chance to UPA in 2014 elections.

"The UPA has no chance of returning to power as it acquired an image of a corrupt government. Government's performance has been pathetic in the past four years," said G.V.L. Narasimha Rao, a member of the BJP's poll reforms cell.

Now the question is this - how will the UPA fare in upcoming general elections in 2014? Manmohan Singh publicly says that he would welcome Rahul Gandhi's elevation as PM in 2014 but he has also indicated that he is not averse to third term in PMO.

Rahul Gandhi, the heir apparent seems confused. He says he is not interested in becoming Prime Minister. Then who would be the Prime Minister in case UPA returns to power for third time in a row? Is the Gandhi family planning to set the stage for Priyanka Gandhi who looks all set to try her luck from Rai Bareli Lok Sabha constituency this time? Only time will tell.

As we know, perception matters a lot in electoral politics and the public perception of this UPA govt is less than satisfactory. As the UPA-II completes 4 years in office on May 22, the prospects of the ruling coalition does not look very good for 2014 but as we say, politics is a game of possibilities. There is still one more year to go before the general elections of 2014 and who knows what equation will be in place by that time? After all, one year is too long a time in politics.
