LIVE: Rahul Gandhi files nomination from Amethi, confident of "good victory"

Amethi: Holding a massive road show, Rahul Gandhi today filed his nomination papers from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency seeking a hat-trick and expressed confidence about his “good victory” dismissing the challenge from BJP's Smriti Irani

Gandhi said will continue to focus on these issues in future also and try to give a fillip to rail and road connectivity to Amethi.

“I will work with intensity to generate more employment for youths. That will be my focus”, he said.  Before filing nomination, Rahul's 42-kilometer long road show was marked by frequent halts in a 16-kilometer area adjacent to Sultanpur where party workers greeted the Gandhi family by showering flowers and garlands.  Both Priyanka and Rahul travelled in an open vehicle and frequently stepped forward to greet the crowd of supporters lined up on both sides of the road.

In Amethi, Rahul was welcomed with drum beats and songs as the carcade reached near Guariganj.  Sonia, Rahul and Priyanka later also held a meeting with party workers from the three parliamentary constituencies of Rae Bareli, Amethi and Sultanpur and told them to shun groupism. Amethi will go to polls on May 7.

The event has evoked curosity as this is for the first time Rahul is organising such a political campaign from a constituency where another Gandhi family member is fighting against a Congress candidate.

Locals say it is quite unusual that a Gandhi family member is carrying out such a political procession in support of a party candidate against another family member.  They have so far refrained from campaigning in each other's constituency.

Amita, along with her husband, also received Gandhi at the airport in Sultanpur and accompanied him in the roadshow. Varun had contested the last Lok Sabha seat from Pilbhit and won by over three lakh votes.

After shifting to Sultanpur seat, he has been reaching out to people telling them that Sultanpur was the ‘karmbhoomi” of his late father. Varun has not mentioned Narendra Modi's name in his campaigning so far.

The Gandhi family travelling in a white SUV received a warm welcome from people who raised slogans in their favour.  Sonia and Rahul Gandhi paid a visit to a local resident Kamruddin in Sanha village and asked about his family's well being.

In an informal chat in Dhammaur area, Priyanka was queried about BJP fielding Smriti Irani against Rahul.  “Everyone who comes to Amethi is welcome. There is an arrangement in democracy for everyone to contest election”, she said.

The gatherings at Gandhi's roadshow is something that has taken party supporters by surprise as there is an all-round buzz here that the Congress Vice President may retain the seat but his victory margin is expected to be down.
