New Delhi: Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung today directed the Principal Secretary of Social Welfare department to ensure quick disbursement of pension to the elderly.

“These are the most vulnerable of our people and we must ensure there is quick disbursement of pension to them,” Jung said as he reviewed the progress on the handing out of pensions to the approximately 40,000 newly-added beneficiaries to the existing old-age pension scheme.

The Principal Secretary (Social Welfare) informed Jung that the number of those covered under the ‘Pension to Senior Citizens' scheme has increased with 40,000 names being added in this financial year to the existing list of 3.90 lakh beneficiaries.

“There has been an addition of 37, 527 beneficiaries till Nov. 10. The process of fresh registration began on Sept. 1.  Principal Secretary (Social Welfare) informed that while the existing beneficiaries are already getting pensions, the newly -added ones shall receive their pension by the quarter ending December, 2014.

“The LG instructed the officials to strictly adhere to this deadline,” said a senior Delhi government official.  Following the instructions from Jung, the officials concerned have been directed to process the applications in respect of the 37,527 applicants as the verification of their documents, including bank account and Aadhar numbers, has been completed.

“The department is in the process of verifying the existence of present beneficiaries in the 60-to-69 age group.  A door-to-door survey which was initiated on Sept. 8 has been almost completed,” said the official.
