New Delhi: It was a fateful autumn morning in October 1984, when the nation lost its Iron Lady. On 31st October at 9.20 in the morning, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her two Sikh bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh. The two bodyguards wanted to take revenge for Operation Blue Star which led to the death of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and caused huge damage to the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar. On the day of her assassination, Indira Gandhi had an interview scheduled with British actor Peter Ustinov. The venue of her meeting was fixed at 1 Akbar Road office. This was the corridor which she walked upon to reach the venue. She was walking towards the venue from her residence 1, Safdarjung Road. As she reached the gate which was guarded by Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, both the guards opened fire at her. This is the place where she fell. Within 10 minutes of the assassination, she was rushed to All India Institute of Medical Sciences. She was declared dead by doctors at 2.20 pm . The entire nation was in a state of shock and sorrow. According to postmortem reports, 30 bullets had hit Indira Gandhi. The nation mourned its great leader's death. Rajiv Gandhi, Indira's elder son performed the last rites three days later at Shakti Sthal. She was cremated on November 3, 1984 at Shakti Sthal near Rajghat.
