Before entering politics, Kunal was a journalist. He was the editor of Bengali dailies Sangbad Pratidin and Sakalbela and also the head of the Meida unit of Saradha Group. For this post, he was paid Rs 16 lakh per month as his salary.Kunal Ghosh was also the CEO of Channel 10.Kunal led a luxurious life. He joined the Trinamool Congress and was at that time quite close to the party's chief Mamata Banerjee.However, his political career has always put him into unsavoury controversy.Ghosh was a prominent figure during the 2009 Bengal Assembly elections when his scathing attack and harsh language against the incumbent CM Budhdhadeb Bhattacharya was specially noticed.In 2012, Ghosh's educational qualification created quite a scene.While Ghosh's highest academic qualification mentioned in his EC affidavit is just 'Madhyamik' (state secondary board exam, 1985), his Rajya Sabha profile states he pursued a certificate course (no specific year mentioned) in audio visual journalism, media management from Annex College of Management and Annex-Cygnus Institute of Management, Kolkata.Incidentally, he was a board member of the institute.Surprisingly the Annex College denied running any such course in their curriculum ever. When the media contacted him, Kunal said there was an error in the EC Affidavit.'I wanted to highlight the professional side of my career and accordingly gave the details to the Rajya Sabha site and they uploaded it,' Ghosh added.Mukul Roy's profiles on the two portals held a similar 'error'. His Rajya Sabha profile mentioned he did his higher secondary schooling from Harneet High School at Kanchrapara in North 24 Parganas, after which he enrolled at Calcutta University, where he only completed Part-I (first and second year) of his BSc course.But in his EC affidavit, the railways minister said he also has an MA in public administration from Madurai- Kamraj University in 2006.Now Kunal Ghosh is caught in the midst of a major scam.When the Saradha Scam came into limelight and CBI made quite a lead in the case, Sudipto Sen, the chairman and managing director of the Saradha Group wrote a letter to the CBI accusing Ghosh of forcing him to sign some documents and letters for sale of the news channel Channel 10 to him. Ghosh denied all the allegations.An FIR was filed against Ghosh at the Bhowanipore police station by employees of the closed Bengali daily Sakalbela for non-payment of salaries and another at the Park Street police station by employees of Channel 10, for a similar reason. He was later interrogated by the police on these charges.Kunal, once a close aide of Mamata Banerjee, was on 29 September 2013 suspended by the TMC.Recently he attempted suicide in jail. Before committing the act he had threatened to commit suicide when he was produced before a city court on November 10 if CBI did not take "proper action" against those involved within three days."Investigation is being influenced. It is not acceptable that I will rot in jail while those involved will roam freely. I am giving three days' time, if action is not taken I will commit suicide," he had told metropolitan magistrate Arvind Mishra at Bankshall Court here. Kunal Ghosh is in proper health and the case is yet to be probed.
