Suresh Prabhu (Cabinet minister):
The man who was picked up by the then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee to plan the nationwide interlinking of rivers.
He comes as cabinet minister at the centre for the second time. A chartered accountant by profession, Suresh Prabhu, age 61, has a clean and pro-active image.
He was elected to Lok Sabha four times. In Vajpayee govt, he was first made Industry Minister, then given the Environment portfolio, and then Heavy Industry and Public enterprises. He was made chairman of the task force for interlinking of rivers, but its work fell midway after the UPA came to power in 2004.
Suresh Prabhu has been appointed sherpa (pointsperson) by PM Narendra Modi for the G-20 summit in Brishbane going to be held on Nov 15-16. He will be going there with the PM.
Currently, he is chairman of Council on energy, environment and water, and is also a member of Global Advisory Council of World Economic Forum.
Suresh Prabhu was a Shiv Sena leader, but of late, his relations with his party have been strained.
