Kolkata, May 12 : Press Council Chairman Markandeya Katju today heaped praises on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee describing her as a ‘person of outstanding quality' and ‘a very honest and fearless political leader'.
“Her integrity is beyond doubt. She (Banerjee) is from a very ordinary family and lives a very simple life ... There is no scam against her when allegations of scams are in plenty against many political leaders in the country. She is free from any corruption”, Katju told reporters here. Banerjee, he said, does not have an account in any foreign bank.
Katju, who earlier criticised Banerjee for the arrest of a Jadavpur University professor for forwarding by e-mail a cartoon lampooning her and for her government's press accreditation policy, turned critical of the media today. “It is not fair to criticise her.
They (the media) should see her outstanding quality and not defects. Nobody is 100 per cent perfect. You must see her viewpoint”, said Katju, who met Banerjee at her office at the state secretariat Writers Buildings to discuss complaints about press cards.
